4. Characterization of the AFS main-crop quality for value addition to farmers’ incomes

The objective of WP4 is to characterize the quality of AFS’ main cash-crop products, and to identify the main factors affecting this quality. Indeed, the quality can be linked with various environmental parameters; particularly with shade level, genetic variety, soil quality, and other tree or cash-crop associations within the cultivated plot.

The required criteria to assess quality will be different depending on the main cash-crop: cocoa, coffee, or clove.

The secondary important parameters that might have an important impact on the quality are the post-harvest treatment and the local cultivation practices. After identification of the process used locally (by WP2), the influence of these parameters will be also characterized.
