2. Characterisation of farming systems and identification of long term drivers at household and landscape levels

This work package acts at two scales and two levels of organization that focus on landscape-scale (regional and village land units) and farm households (family labour based and waged labour based). These two analysis and organization levels require specific study steps to be done through a complementary approach. Their common goal is to show how strategies of various farm types interact with each other for structuring local landscapes in the long run. A historical analysis will be used at each scale. The drivers of the current situation will be characterized and the current situation evaluated in connection with WP3.

As part of a third activity, scenarios will be established through prospective analysis to study and monitor farm households’ evolution, strategies and assess their impact on farmers livelihood and food security and the evolution of landscapes and future interactions between AFS and food production.

The steps should allow, from an understanding of local dynamics to: (i) clearly identify the variety of current situations; (ii) sample many contrasting situations on which the investigation and analysis will be implemented; (iii) build a model to evaluate further changes over time. Spatial analysis will be essential to move from one scale to another and to understand farm activities according to their climax.

The objective will also be to develop common methods with local adaptation to each context of the three countries and their selected study sites
